Although we read with our eyes, research has demonstrated that speech is the starting point for reading. Phonological and phonemic awareness are the foundation for reading and are crucial skills to develop in the early stage of a child’s reading journey. This webinar will look at what these terms mean, why it is vital to develop these skills with young beginning readers and how to provide instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness in the classroom.
Dr Jennifer O'Sullivan is a lecturer in literacy at Marino Institute of Education. She is also the President of the Literacy Association of Ireland. She co-authored the phonics programme 'Sounds Like Phonics' and is the author of the new phonological awareness programme 'Sound Beginning for Reading'.
