CSPE, religion, SPHE, and Wellbeing teachers will be interested in this FREE 12 week fully resourced (lesson plans and worksheets) Global Citizenship & Environmental Education Resource Booklet. You can access the booklet here. Some of the key skills that are covered include critical thinking, being creative, listening, debating, empathy, and solidarity.
The new Looking at Our Schools 2022 Framework states that highly effective schools promote and prioritise sustainability as a core value. Sustainability is a fast changing landscape and it can be difficult to stay up to speed. You do not need to be an expert! These fun, engaging, thought provoking sessions are designed to support all teachers no matter what your level of knowledge or expertise. The sessions are topical, up-to-date and include Irish temperate rainforest, climate psychology, fast fashion, soils, greenwashing, fossil fuel subsidies, and more.
Most of the sessions have an associated worksheet (with answers included) and a walking debate which are enclosed in this booklet. The sessions received lots of positive feedback from teachers and students and we hope that they prove to be a valuable resource for you and your students.
This CPD will outline the 12 week fully resourced global citizenship and environmental course. You will be provided with tips on how to make the most of these sessions and will be taken through some of the activities.
Patrick Kirwan BSc PhD PGCE
After a career in science as an epidemiologist, Patrick trained as secondary science teacher with Teach First in London. While working in disadvantaged London schools Patrick developed a bespoke award-winning model for a whole school nature curriculum. This fundamentally changed his perception on education. While continuing to teach, Patrick set up the nature aspect of a community social enterprise to share his model with other primary and secondary schools. In school and community settings, he uses nature as a conduit to foster wellbeing, leadership skills, confidence, resilience, environmental awareness and climate action. In March 2021 Patrick founded The Irish Schools Sustainability Network (ISSN). The network brings together teachers and students from different schools to foster climate and nature conversations. These schools work together as a community on joint initiatives, they share best practice, and they work towards pushing sustainability to the top of the educational agenda. The ISSN ran the Climate and Nature Summit during COP26. Over 2K schools took part. Patrick believes that we need to build networks within and across sectors, working as one, to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.
